Sala Bai Hotel School

Sala Bai Hotel School is a vocational training school in Siem Reap, Cambodia, dedicated to combating poverty and human trafficking through hospitality education. Founded in 2002 by the French NGO, Agir Pour le Cambodge, Sala Bai specifically targets young Cambodians from underprivileged backgrounds, offering them free training in the hospitality industry, which is one of the country’s key economic sectors.

Mission and Educational Approach

The mission of Sala Bai is to provide disadvantaged Cambodian youth with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to secure gainful employment in the hospitality industry, thereby ensuring their economic independence and preventing them from falling victim to trafficking. The school’s approach is hands-on, with a curriculum that covers practical and theoretical aspects of hospitality, including hotel operations, restaurant service, cooking, and front office management.

Programs and Impact

Sala Bai offers a one-year training program to approximately 100 to 150 students annually. The curriculum is designed not just to impart technical skills but also to improve English language proficiency and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality industry. Students receive training in one of four main disciplines:

  • Restaurant Service
  • Cooking
  • Front Office
  • Housekeeping

In addition to technical skills, Sala Bai emphasizes life skills education, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of the workplace and can navigate their careers successfully.

The impact of Sala Bai extends beyond the students to their families and communities. By securing employment after graduation, Sala Bai students significantly increase their earning potential, which in turn benefits their families economically and contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty. Since its inception, Sala Bai has trained over 1,500 young Cambodians, with a nearly 100% employment rate among graduates.

Sustainability and Community Involvement

Sala Bai operates a training restaurant and hotel where students can apply their learning in real-world settings. These enterprises not only provide practical experience for students but also generate income to support the school’s operations, exemplifying a sustainable model of education and business.

How to Support

Support for Sala Bai Hotel School can come in various forms, including dining at their training restaurant, staying at their training hotel, direct donations, or sponsorship of students. These contributions ensure that Sala Bai can continue to offer its training programs free of charge to the students.

Sala Bai Hotel School is a powerful example of how targeted vocational training can transform lives and uplift communities. Through education and empowerment, the school continues to make a significant impact on the lives of young Cambodians, providing them with a pathway out of poverty and towards a brighter future.
